Robert Hanson, Emily Meyer announce engagement

Teresa and Steve Meyer of Garrison, along with John and Shirale Hanson of Vinton, are pleased to announce the engagement of their children Emily Meyer and Robert Hanson. Emily and Robert will be getting married on August 1, 2015 at the Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Vinton, Iowa.  Emily graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 2014.

NCCC Corps Class 21 Team Leader Spotlight: Deanna Robey

Deanna Robey from Sacramento, California is serving as the Operations Support Team Leader in AmeriCorps NCCC Corps Class 21. She arrived in Vinton in January of 2015 to start her 11-month service term with the program assisting in the operations of and supply management for the North Central Region. Her role is to assist in all facets of campus operations including residence, resource, supply, and fleet management, and provide member support.

NCCC Class 21 Corps Member Spotlight: Tianna Morris

Tianna Morris from Helena, Montana is serving on team Cedar 1 in AmeriCorps NCCC Corps Class 21. She arrived in Vinton in February of 2015 to start her 10-month service term with the program. Cedar 1 is made up of seven people from across the country who serve together around the Midwest. Before her term of service she graduated from the Starr Mills High school in 2010.

Amy Andrews graduates from Central College

Central College senior Amy Andrews graduated magna cum laude May 16 in Pella, Iowa, with a degree in communication studies. Andrews, of Shellsburg, was one of 263 students who completed degrees in 36 majors. Central's class of 2015 came from 18 states, including Florida, California, Arizona, Washington, Colorado, Ohio, New Jersey and Michigan.

Ewing and Meyers, named to Dean's List at Clarke University

Kelsey Ewing and David Meyers of Walford, were named to the Dean's List at Clarke University for the spring 2015 semester. The list recognizes full-time Clarke students who have earned a 3.65 grade-point average or above, on a 4.0 scale, with a minimum of 12 graded hours.  Clarke University is a Catholic, liberal arts and sciences university dedicated to preparing students to make an impact.

100 + 2: Bethlehem Lutheran helps Vinton Feeds the World

Marta Bauer-Event Coordinator for Vinton Feeds the World and Bethlehem Member, and George Bauer. On June 28, 2015, Bethlehem Lutheran Church presented a gift of $102.00 to the Vinton Feeds the World, God's Work, Our Hands food packaging event.   On September 13th, in conjunction with Outreach Inc., Bethlehem Lutheran and other area churches will participate in a food packaging event at the Vinton Skate Center at 1pm.  During this event, we will package 20,000+ meals to be distributed locally and internationally.

VS FFA members share love of animals at Party in the Park

On June 25th Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter members woke up early to have a head start on Party in the Park set up. After grabbing the trashcans from the fairgrounds, the FFA members put them out around the Farmers Savings Bank and the court house for the events that were held their later that day. The next day, Friday the 26th, members moved the trashcans from down town to the park, where they set up the gates for the animals that members brought Saturday for the petting zoo and pony rides.

Hailey Benson of Newhall pursues full-time research at Central College

Central College student Hailey Benson of Newhall became a full-time researcher this summer. Benson, a biochemistry major, is working with professor of chemistry Cathy Haustein to develop safer lab methods for lessons in analytical chemistry. Benson is one of 23 student researchers on campus this summer. Students are supported by various grants, including support from the Arthur J.
